Monthly Vehicle Checks – Sacrifice The Time To Protect Your Auto Investment
Your vehicle is probably one of your biggest investments. You probably spend several hours in your car or truck each week. Why risk a repair bill from a small problem that only grew worse with time? If you catch these issues early, you can save time and heartache later on.
It is important to maintain a healthy car. Jeff Thames, ASE Certified Technician and service manager at Bert's Gene Brown Transmission, has prepared a few very important monthly car care tips. If you catch these issues early and work with your favorite automotive technician, you can prevent your car from turning into an expensive hazard.
There are many simple things you can do to help maintain your car. Your vehicle is made up of several complex systems and parts. Certain parts need replacing or, at the least, regular maintenance.
MONTHLY CHECKS
- Brake Fluid. This is perhaps the most important monthly check you must make. Your brakes are what allow your vehicle to stop properly. The brake fluid is used to transfer force from the act of braking to the brake system near the wheels.
- Coolant / Anti-freeze. This product is what keeps your car from overheating. Contrary to popular belief, you actually need to keep an eye on this level throughout the year, not just the warmer months. Insufficient or blocked flow can cause your engine to seize up or otherwise be damaged.
- Oil. This is one of the primary items to check each month. Make sure you use the proper oil for your vehicle, which you can find in your owner’s manual. Lack of proper oil can lead to engine wear.
- Power Steering Fluid. Modern cars are generally equipped with power steering. This allows your vehicle’s tires to turn easily, even at a standstill. Have the levels of this liquid checked regularly.
- Tire Pressure. While this may seem like a given, many people neglect to check their tires, unless there is an obvious flat. Low tire pressure can erode several supporting systems in your car and even cause you more money at the gas pump.
- Transmission Fluid. Especially for vehicles with automatic transmission, this liquid needs to be checked periodically. This liquid is responsible for providing lubrication to the transmission system, which is responsible for allowing your engine to power the wheels. Left unchecked, you may miss a problem that can lead to costly repairs later on.
Don’t let these problems get out of hand before you have them checked. Bert's Gene Brown Transmission offers free diagnostic service for all customers. With many years of total-car care experience, the technicians at Ayala are experienced with every nook and cranny of auto repair. In addition to affordable prices and professional integrity, this repair center has been the go-to repair shop for people throughout San Antonio.

What could cause the traction control, check engine, brake, and abs lights to come on and stay on?
The car is a 2002 Pontiac Sunfire with a 2.4L engine. The fluids are all within spec, and the brakes and rotors are in new condition.
Very common problem on GM vehicles of this vintage. Usually turns out to be a bad ABS sensor or a short in the ABS wiring harness. Traction control gets all of its inputs from the ABS system. So as soon as there's a problem in the ABS, it shuts down the traction control and set a trouble code. That's why all the lights are on. Have the shop start by checking for shorts in the ABS wiring harness. It's usually the one that goes to the right front wheel. If that checks out, then check out the sensors.
