What type of performance increase from X1650 pro to HD3870?
I am looking at upgrading my computer this christmas, I am going to add watercooling, but I also want a new set of video cards.
My Current Specs are:
Asus P5E Motherboard
2 * x1650 512MB Diamond MM Video Cards in X-Fire
4GB DDR2 1066 Ram
Q6600
I am looking at replacing the 2 x1650's with 2 HD3870's (512mb). What type of performance increase would I likely see? I know the HD3870 is DX10.1 capable, so that would be faster, but what about games without DX10 coding?
P.S. I could also use some help watercooling, as this will be my first attempt. If someone were to PM me willing to help a little bit, that would be greatly appreciated, as I am confused like **** when it comes to the radiator!!!
The performance difference will be vast. As a point of reference, a single 3870 will likely score 2-4 times higher in a benchmark such as 3dmark than the x1650, depending on which version of the program is used. Of course, since it's DX10 capable and the 1650 is not, there's really no comparison available there.
In my professional opinion, however, you would be much better suited with a single Radeon 4870. While performance will be similar to dual 3870 cards, your overall power and heat footprints should be lower, and the 4870 actually performs better than dual 3870s when anti-aliasing is enabled at most resolutions.
While 2 3870s will most likely run you a little under $300, you can actually pick up a 4870 for the same price, or even less. There are a few on Newegg running between 210 and 240 [USD]. This also leaves the opportunity available to add another 4870 in the future. Overall, you're getting more advanced technology, more upgradability, and better efficiency from the system.
